This Sunday I was wondering what to write about in my usual rambling column, With Facebook launching yet another redesign I was musing to myself about what all this change means for the Facebook ecosystem.
It was then that my wife in a sudden moment of techclarity said:
"I'm so sick of Facebook, why do they keep changing it? it's just more clutter all the time. At least with Twitter its just Login, update status, interact" - My Wife
To say this was like a bolt of lightening would be an understatement, you see my wife isn't a tech person, has little interest in Social Media other than using it to talk to friends, she is your average 26 year old Female.
So for an average user to sum it up in a way that would make most Social Media experts giddy is very interesting, how many more people after the latest Facebook redesign are saying the same thing or similar?
I think there is a real danger that Facebook is trying so hard to stay relevant that it starts to drive users to simpler services where the sands don't constantly feel like they are shifting.
For Facebook it's a double edged sword either innovate and risk alienating users or stay as it is and become the new Myspace. Problem is both those paths can lead to the same dark place, a network full of people but with all the life and interactions sucked out of it by either over innovation to the point that users stop caring or stagnation.
What do you think? Has Facebook become more trouble than it's worth?
I'm still not sure of the answer just yet.
