When the snow came down Europe froze and 2000 people got stuck in the Euro Tunnel linking England and France..some All Night!
What followed next can only be described as a Social Media Disaster of Epic Fail proportions. The official EuroStar Twitter account is @littlebreak and run by a third party marketing company on behalf of EuroStar.
They were slow to respond to the crisis developing and even had their automated tweet system still tweeting Euro holiday packages as trains were being canceled and people were being rescued from stricken trains.
Techcrunch Europe has a round up of the problems people stuck on the trains were suffering including no food or water for 15 hours and a lack of diapers for babies.
As some on Twitter have noted this is a watershed moment for Social Media, big businesses are about to see what happens when you ignore social media or what little engagement you do is pushing products not conversation.
Eurostar could of been social media heroes today, they could of been pushing updates every 15 minutes, helped to coordinate the response from family's and loved ones waiting for trapped passengers and just offered a little bit of comfort that the big corporate entity is doing all it can to resolve what is a difficult and challenging situation.
Even Google Real Time search was in effect on EuroStar Keywords
Instead they they will be remembered as the first company who utterly messed up in every reguard from the responce on the ground to communicating in the Social Age.
EuroStar U #EpicFail !
*Update 1: Just noticed that the @eurostar_uk account that said it was Unofficial has now been deleted! Interestingly I tried to register that name on Twitter and it says its registered wonder if it's being handed over to EuroStar
