Techcrunch reported over the weekend that Facebook has been hit by a Click Fraud attack, that could be as much as 20% of the Ad invetory across the network.
What Is Click Fraud?
When ever you click on an advert on any website it is registered as a Click, a collection of Clicks gives us a Click Through Rate (CTR) it's important because CTR is people seeing your website and potentially making a donation.
Click Fraud is usualy caused by a BOT working its way through the website (Facebook) and clicking every advert it finds, it then returns to the original site (Facebook) and carries on its automated clicking.
The effect of this is YOU as the advertiser pay for a click that was never human and never stood a chance of being converted to a donation or action. Facebook have admitted the Fraud and data from some users suggests this could of been going on since early/mid May.
Check your logs
If you advertise on Facebook please compare your Facebook Advertising statistics to your websites logs, Ideally your servers RAW logs if you can't access your RAW logs Google Analytics will do. Any discrepancy between the CTR Facebook claims and the number of users who actually arrived to your site via a Facebook Advertising link report it to Facebook advertising services. Details are in your Facebook Advertising account, Facebook have said they will provide refunds automatically but its worth checking to see if you were affected anyway!
Ideally you want to Identify any visitor that spent around 1 second on your site no more and came from a Facebook Advertising URL as this would most likely be a BOT or fake click.
