The Times is reporting Twitter board member Todd Chaffee as saying, “As people use Twitter to get trusted recommendations from friends and followers on what to buy, e-commerce navigation and payments will certainly play a role in Twitter monetization.”
It's long been stated by the guys at Twitter that they only want to do unique things that use the relevancy of the followers recommendations to drive the business model, if they are about to integrate say Amazon products directly into the system that could be very powerful.Say you ask your followers which mp3 player to buy and they reply with a few sugestions, now they probably dropped you a link in as well but what if the product name ipod Touch was automatically linked to say Amazom?
Which link would you click? Another way would be for Twitter and Bit.ly (the default url shortening service) to create a wrapper to include links to ecommerce partners in a side bar on the page your follower sent you. (Example: http://su.pr/32IIrt)
Now if Twitter is smart they will find some way to reward the original referrer say with credits towards Twitter premium services? I would rather avoid a direct £/$ payment as it would be more open to abuse.
What do you think? How can Twitter create Tweetmerce without causing even bigger issues?
